also on the subject of Lynx treatment of line lengths,
Lynx 2-8pre.2 renders the following HTML:
what happens when there is a very long hyphenated word
which-overlaps-awkwardly-for-Lynx-at-the-end-of-one-line-and-the-beginning-of-another
<p>
what happens when there are soft hyphens in a word
whichoverlapsawkwardlyforLynxattheendofonelineandthebeginningofanother
<p>
as
what happens when there is a very long hyphenated word
which-overlaps-awkwardly-for-Lynx-at-the-end-of-one-line-and-the-begin
ning-of-another
what happens when there are soft hyphens in a word whichoverlaps-
awkwardlyforLynxattheendofonelineandthebeginningofanother
shouldn't Lynx render an overtly hyphenated word (1st example)
by breaking it at a hyphen, which it in fact does for the 2nd example?
does HTML really require that authors add `' after every `-' ?
surely not, since that would insert an EXTRA hyphen in example 2 ...
this thought was provoked by a couple of lines in Washington Post today
which Lynx rendered (roughly)
The latest Russian appointments include a leading
Communist-turned-reformer who is expected to change direction in the
where more normal behaviour would write

reformer who is expected to change direction in the ...
there was a recent discussion of soft hyphens,
but it didn't cover example 1 & didn't result in any changes IIRC.
