lynx-dev Invoking lynx on a .gif file

This is for lynx 2.8rel.2 (1998)

When lynx is invoked with a URL pointing to a .gif file, as in
   lynx http://www.dbai.tuwien.ac.at/images/tulogo-small.gif
it downloads the file, invokes a graphics viewer (xv in our case) and
immediately terminates with a message of 
   lynx: Start file could not be found or is not text/html or text/plain
         Exiting...

However, upon termination it also deletes the temporary file where it
has downloaded the .gif, so the graphics viewer fails to locate and
display that file.

How to fix: Do not download the graphics file nor invoke the viewer at
all.
