Just come out and say you're using Linux (or not) so we'll at least be able
to make a stab in the dark. As another poster already mentioned, setting up
your console to display Chinese characters is your job. You should ask on
a Slackware or Linux help list.

As far as Lynx goes, yes. While the C and K parts of CJK may not be fully
debugged, I know for a fact that Japanese works very well in all of the
possible ways I mentioned for using Lynx.

I find such systems much more useful as terminals than anything else. But,
in fact I have run Lynx on the console of a desktop with 486SX, 4MB memory
and 80MB hdd -- in Japanese, and using Slackware port to the Fujitsu FMR.
This was at the level of Lynx2.7, probably more than 4 years ago. I had to
compile Lynx on another machine with 8MB of memory, and it still took a
half-day.

You'll have a tough time I should think with a modern Slackware. I'd
recommend NetBSD for it's compactness -- you could get all the character-
cell (text) tools you need to run Lynx in just under 120MB of hdd space.
You would have to compile your kernel and Lynx on another machine, unless
you are willing to use binaries, which are available for many platforms.
