We just had this discussion a few days ago.

Most Americans don't understand that kB != KB, and since mB would
already be millibytes, MiB were invented, alongside with Ki, Gi
etc. and are in the process of being standardized by the Systeme
Internationale des Unitees (plusminus spelling) - until then, they
are still recommendations.

Thus we agreed on kB = 1000 and KiB = 1024, and let the user choose.

Also, when a luser doesn't grok KiB, what will he do?
Throw on google, since he's already in a web browser...
