This might explain things.I assumed the 2.8.5 was leftover in the optoins (since lynx does not change it once it's set). Clearing the field in the options menu will force it to put in a current string.
My understanding of [O]ptions is that there is no persistent User-Agent setting (marked with (!) indicates this) - so UA string can lie if lynx is aliased as 'lynx -useragent="hello from lynx2.8.5" ' but can't lie otherwise.
