I recognize that xz is a little over-eager when displaying progress.
Both gzip and bzip2 -v show a per-file result, and only when -vv is used
does bzip2 shows a more fine-grained progress, and that is what I would
like to see with lzip -vv.

Well, code reduction was my thought (since bzip2 uses libbz2 and xz
uses liblzma5), but it turns out gzip does not use libz either, so
my inquiry has been satisfactorily answered :)
