I fixed the memory leak already.  I still see a few bytes lost here and
there using valgrind on the regression tests, but nothing large enough
to be too concerned about.

I've got 3 local workspaces with different approaches to manage the
"uses lots of memory" issue... I'm having a hard time coming up with
something that makes a difference, and yet doesn't involve massive
changes to the code, which I don't want to get into at this point
(mainly because I'm worried about all the ports being able to get
updated in time).

I'm going to try one more thing over the next few days and if it doesn't
seem like it will work with a relatively self-contained set of changes
I'm just going to punt that problem for 3.81 :-/.
