Sorry, but I'm still unable to reproduce that bug. I just
compiled gzip-1.3.12 on my own and everything worked fine.
So it's either zlib or an unnoticed download error.

What's your zlib version? You can reveal it via:

    dpkg -l 'zlib*' | grep '^.i'

If that doesn't work, please try this:

    ls -l /usr/lib/libz.so*

Also, please send your "pkg/expat-2.0.1.tar.gz" file to me.
Since it is quite big, you should send it to me in private
rather than to the list.
