Its probably my deletion of line 19 in curl.mk (and any other .mk that uses that script).
Line 19 is: cd '$(1)' && ./buildconfwhich works on old Linux installations since they have many versions of autoconf, but in my installation (1 year old) I only have the latest and that script never works, keeps asking for an old version which I'm not going to install.
Sorry for the noise. I still don't understand why the other substitutions on the same file worked, but not the last... anyway I already had patched the patch with the value set as fixed, not a substitution.
