So far it's ready to sync.

Furthermore I have tidied up configure.ac.  It is starting to get really
messy! And all .c and .h files have now proper #ifdef HAVE_FOO_H tokens.

In case no one has pending syncs I would like to sync it... and patch
nearly every .c file. (-:
