Problem monitoring exim

From time to time, monit decides that exim (MTA) isn't running,
and restarts it. However, exim is running... and is registering
this in the logs:

2007-06-03 09:07:21 SMTP protocol violation: synchronization error (input sent 
without waiting for greeting): rejected connection from H=localhost [127.0.0.1]

i.e. Monit is violating the SMTP RFC by sending input out of sequence;
exim drops the connection, and then monit restarts exim.
