program alert exit status for the message queue

Hi,

I have a program set up for sending sms messages in addtion to emails using 
m/monit 2.3.

Do these messages go through through the same mechanism as email and 
jabber/gtalk? If so, what must the program/script return in case of an error 
for the message to be queued?
