In the medium term, you should also inform monotone upstream of the
state of Botan in Debian and ask:

- what is the state in other major distributions?
- how popular is Botan?
- what alternative libraries exist?
- what would be the cost of switching to an alternative that has more
users and therefore more support in distributions?

I realize that, since Botan upstream uses monotone for development, we
might see Botan as a friend we don't want to leave :) but if that is the
case, let's say so explicitly.
