you might need to build against a different libiconv/libintl (maybe
GNU's). the autotools support (we reuse) for that is extremly broken, so
it can be a bit nasty, and it usually takes a bit of experimentation for
me to get this right, too.
I know that both gnu iconv and sunos 5.10's iconv (not sure about older
ones) can be made to work right, but sometimes you can hit weird mixed
forms - take a look which headers are in use and which libraries are
linked.
