I have 0.35 and this works for me:

calypso:~/Documents/FIB/PFC/doc/report> mtn diff .
#
# no changes
#
calypso:~/Documents/FIB/PFC/doc/report> mtn --version
monotone 0.35 (base revision: f92dd754bf5c1e6eddc9c462b8d68691cfeb7f8b)
calypso:~/Documents/FIB/PFC/doc/report>


Are you in the root directory or a subdirectory of the workspace? '.'
actually works fine for me in the root of the workspace, I only get
this in subdirectories.
