Hrm. Well, that works for me. I suspect you're not going to get it going without that option.
It makes a kind of sense that you're seeing the same behaviour in both situations (through socat and direct) - I don't understand why they're different for me. (For me, socat works but direct freezes.)
I've done all my testing on MacOS X 10.4 with socat installed through the fink package system. I wont be able to do much in-depth testing any time soon.
