I get the same error here with gcc4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1 on gentoo. If I export LANG=en_CA.utf8 it works fine.

I've been poking at a few different revs but haven't found the culprit yet.
What we really need is a bisect command, which I've been meaning to do for a while now. ;)
