Hello

At the caBIG meeting I met up with Denise Warzel (responsible for the Data Standards Repository) and Steve Harris and Peter Maccallum (cancerGRID)

they distinguish between recording experimental data, capturing semantic metadata and computable semantic interoperability They are developing with cancerGrid a simplified system. Steve Harris is in Manchester on 27th July.

cancerGrid have actually BUILT a semantic grid. Hurrah! Looks REALLY interesting. They have built a metadata repository. And they have built an ontology for clinical research studies -- and that is being done with Alan Rector at Manchester!

capturing semantic metadata
the caBIG use ISO/IEC 11179 -- they claim it is extensible and you can use a vocabulary to describe the relationships between components of a Common Data Element using a vocabulary such that (a) you can describe contents and (b) you can pivot on terms to search for other objects carrying those terms (that is like typed tag pivoting). CDE's a objects that move around caBIG and are exchanged, consumed and produced by services.

we probably also should check out the OMG MOF stuff too. http://www.omg.org/mof/
