One of the original uses of the term mashup is from music [1,2] and more
recently, video. Christine Aguilera vs. the Strokes is a classic
example, but there are many others.
Less "mashed potato", more "potato fusion cuisine" if you like...
The journal Nature have taken it to mean something slightly different in
the context of scientific web applications [3].
