RE: [Myexperiment-discuss] FW: [skua-discuss] Open social

Hi Tony

We've been tracking open social. It's not currently on our development
workplan, but we are very responsive (actually, totally responsive!) to user
requirements - so if there's a clear use case that needs open social we will
look at it, and as ever we'd be particularly keen to work with and support
others who would like to use open social with myExperiment.

Please let us know if anyone is interested in pursuing this...

Thanks

Hi all, I'm Tony Linde, one of the initiators of the JISC SKUA project
(http://myskua.org). We're looking into the use of myExperiment as the
platform for one of the SKUA test apps.

Ross Gardler, manager of OSSWatch, has asked on our discussion list whether
myExperiment intends to add Open Social, so I thought I'd pass the question
across.

Cheers,
Tony.

Food for thought...

I was playing with open social recently. More specifically, I was
playing with Shindig the reference implementation of OpenSocial that is
being donated to the Apache Incubator.

Given that the Skua project will be creating components for a social
network tool I wondered if you had considered using OpenSocial?

To give you an idea of what is involved:

- download Shindig from the ASF Incubator

- run the OpenSocial server somewhere convenient (this is optional but
makes things easier to develop)

- add a few lines to the page generated by your social network app (load
the Shindig container code, load the desired gadgets)

That's it (apart from writing your gadget of course).

The reference implementation lags behind the specification, however, it
is the code Google use on their IG and Orkut products so you are
unlikely to find any more complete implementations ;-)

I am aware you are considering using MyExperiment as your social network
platform, amongst others. Currently there is a licence incompatability
between Shindig and MyExperiment, however, as you know MyExperiment
intend to relicense soon, so that will go away. Another problem is that
MyExperiement does not currently support OpenSocial.

I have no idea if they intend to support it, but given how easy it is
using Shindig, I'm sure they would be happy to work with the Skua
developers to make it happen.

Well, I just wanted to float the idea. It's over to you now. I'll try
and answer any questions you have, but the caveat is I have only played
with Shindig for a couple of days so my knowledge is far from complete.

Ross
