[Myexperiment-discuss] myExperiment for a greener planet?

From: David De Roure
Subject: [Myexperiment-discuss] myExperiment for a greener planet?

I recently found myself on a panel at the International Summer School on Grid
Computing making a case for myExperiment supporting green computing (I also
claimed it supports red and blue computing of course! :) After all, we do talk
about recycling workflows! Seriously, I do believe we facilitate more
efficient research.

Anyway, I'm forwarding this info about a Grid Computing Now competition ("Grid
computing for a greener planet") and I'd be pleased if people could propagate
it as appropriate. I think it's a great initiative for recent graduates and IT
professionals - I chaired the judging panel last year.

Thanks

Grid computing for a greener planet

environmental Grid Computing Now! is pleased to announce its second competition for applying innovative grid computing solutions to an environmental problem. The competition is supported by the British Computer Society, The 451 Group, Intellect, Memset, Microsoft, National e-Science Centre, Oxford e-Research Centre, the Technology Strategy Board and WWF.

Who should enter?
Entrants will be invited to enter one of two tracks for this competition:

IT Professional Track: For those who are professionals working in the IT industry.

IT Non Professional Track: For those who are recent graduates, students or research students. You will not be an IT professional working in industry.

Why should I enter?
The competition is an opportunity to see how you can contribute to minimising the impact of human activity on the environment through the use of grid computing. It will provide excellent networking opportunity in the IT sector for those who are already in the field or trying to break into the field.

What is the scope of the competition?
For more information on how we define grid computing and the scope of our competition please click here.

What is the criteria?
'Grid computing for a greener planet' is the main focus for this competition. Entrants will be judged primarily on their solution's feasibility, scope and creativity. Grid computing, a service for sharing computer power and data storage capacity over the internet*, can be applied to any environmental issue that stands to benefit from a huge amount of raw processing power to calculate massive data sets. Entrants have the chance to be very creative.

When will it happen?

03 July - 01 September 2008
Stage 1: Entrants from both the IT Professional and IT Non Professional tracks will be asked to submit an initial proposal of 1000 words that summarises their idea for the competition.
