Hello Chris,

In nano.c, around 1982, there are the lines
            const char *brackets = _("'\")}]>");
            const char *punct = _(".?!");

I think these should not be hard-wired, but configurable, as they depend
on the language the text which is edited is in, and not on some global
configuration as the language of the environment.
