If it helps narrow anything down, this doesn't occur on my Slackware box
(Linux 2.4.32, Slackware-current, glibc 2.3.6, gcc 3.4.5) in 1.3.8,
1.3.9, 1.3.10, or 1.3.10-cvs un rxvt-unicode 7.4.  By the way, what libc
version are you using, in case that makes a difference?
