Could it be an environment setting?  Sort of my default bashrc file stuff:

HISTSIZE=1000
export HISTSIZE

shopt -s histappend
PROMPT_COMMAND='history -a'

export HISTCONTROL=ignoredups

export EDITOR=nano
# for crontab
export VISUAL=nano
