Please forgive me, but it appears my email was full of bugs itself:

* its Suse 10.0
* its glibc 2.3.5

Before I go off and recompile nano for debuging, does this already close 
the case? From your reply it sounds like that is a known-bad combination 
for nano. Also, just like in the Gentoo bug you referenced, the problem 
does not occur in nano 1.2.
