Yeah.  I don't often edit read-only files, but when, then I too
don't notice the warning.  Maybe we should add audio feedback
when the statusbar gives a warning?  And, since nano now has the
ability to colour things, maybe then the status bar should also
have a different colour?

Yes, please.  And inline it here too, if you wish: it will have some
more exposure and will be easier to review.

But... if nano automatically sets View mode when it reads a readonly
file, this also prevents saving the file under a different name.
Does your patch make an exception for ^O?  And does it set on a
per-file basis?  Or will all files be opened in View mode when one
of them is readonly?
