After a bit further testing, I find this problem:
run 'src/nano +11 NEWS', and type:  M-A  <Down>  ^T
(It thinks "lizf" is misspelled and asks to replace it.)

Now make the window narrower and narrower:
  Floating point exception

Hmm..., this is weird because I can't reproduce it. One thing that I noticed
is that when I hit ^T, it doesn't find "lizf" as misspelled. Instead it finds "aclocal"
on line 993 as a misspelled word. It seems the spell checker does not check in
sequential order but randomly. I'm not sure if this is the normal behavior for it or not.
I've never used the spell checking feature of Nano.

(The above is with the internal spell checker, so without
having any speller defined in your .nanorc.)

I don't have any spell checker defined in my .nanorc.
