I've pushed the first two patches, after redoing the comment changes.

I don't like the update_multiline_strdata() thing in a later patch.
It is uglier than adding an array of strings to an undo group.  With
this new function you re-implement this array inside a string.  :|

So, if the original indents (or string data) need separate storage,
then better your earlier implementation.
