I sure don't, but I've always removed mhn.defaults.  As I said,
this is how it works out of the box, and that sucks.

I don't know what you're saying.  Certainly things work just fine
without this setting, even viewing html attachments.

Let's be honest, there are only longtime nmh users.  nmh is the
poster child for grognardware.  The reason I did it this way was
to cater to the longtime users.  If it were up to me, I'd just
remove this line from mhn.defaults entirely.  Maybe I shouldn't
have just assumed that would be shot down.  What do folks think?
