After finding nmh's test directory and 'make check' I ran 'make 
check' on my offending Fedora 16 system.  From that I get:

  ===================
  All 46 tests passed
  ===================

I can only guess that there's something different about the test 
environment versus my "real" environment or ???

Again, the log is attached.

I'm still confused....
