So what is your locale, _exactly_?

It matters.  If it's sending characters that cannot be converted to
the local character set ... things aren't going to work very well with
that.  I don't know the details of your text-to-speech system, so it might
be possible that some characters might be interpreted by it but can't
work in a US-ASCII locale (the language set in the locale doesn't
really matter for this purpose).

It would be useful to know what version of nmh you're using.  Also, if
you are willing to send me a copy of an offending message, I could try
taking a look at it to see what the mystery characters are.
