Also, you'll need to use mhlogin before using xoauth2.  See

Tried that, and adding -tls moved things forward a bit (strace shows STARTTLS and unreadable exchanges afterwards).

However,

 $ mhlogin -user andtho888 -saslmech xoauth2 -authservice gmail
Load the following URL in your browser and authorize nmh to access Gmail:

<URL>

Enter the authorization code: <CODE>

address@hidden ~ $ send -sasl -saslmech xoauth2 -authservice gmail -tls -user andtho888
Use "/home/anders/Mail/draft"? yes

Is there a verbose switch to show e.g. which user/pwd its using? I've been away from nmh for 15 years so memory is a bit rusty...

Next step? andtho888 is a gmail user account (the same as the one I authenticated with with the broswer). The mhlogin man page is not clear what 'user' is. It could just as well be read as just <token> to be used verbatim with -user for send(1) fo the purpose of some internal linkage.
