It's not a common Unix phrase in this context.

How about putting the simple default first?
Refer to chmod.
I guess the "filesystems" qualifier needs to remain.
Is there any profile other than the user's?
`nnn' doesn't make clear it's parsed as octal.
The newly created messages will have a mode of 0600, see chmod(2),
on filesystems that support it.
A Msg-Protect profile entry gives the mode to use instead, in octal.
I often want to know what's going to happen in the default case when
reading documentation, but often have to wade to the end of a
tinkerable's description in the hope it mentions what the default is.
