I just did a test to see what would happen if the nonblocking ioctl call
fails. The program still comes up, the output just sounds strange. (If you
turn up the feedback real high on the delay machine, you should hear a
long fadeout after making a blip with the square machine.)

So that's not where the problem is... unfortunately I can't reproduce your
bug here. Let me know what happens.
