Follow-up Comment #1, bug #29475 (project octave):

I don't think that's a feature I would like to copy.

Functions in Octave (and Matlab) are not supposed to be able to alter the
values of their arguments in the calling scope.  I think that property should
hold for all functions, regardless of how they are defined.

Where is it documented that it is OK for a MEX file to modify its arguments?
