Follow-up Comment #1:

Your test code and octaverc run without problem on a development version
(4f2e46473153) with gnuplot 4.2.5.

The default font is transferred from the root figure (0) to the new plot
which I checked with get(gca).

I also tried changing the default font and looking at the output results in a
pdf viewer and the font is being set correctly.

Please try compiling a recent development release and re-open this report if
you still encounter an error.
