Follow-up Comment #4, bug #29804 (project octave):

ans = -lreadline

this is what i get on putting the following in the command prompt

octave_config_info ("LIBREADLINE")

Although i have been using Ubuntu for quite some time i don't know whether
command line editing and history functions work in my copy of Octave. How do i
check? 

Nothing happens when i press Control P. 

Please start me off on how to reconfigure and recompile to include readline.
