Follow-up Comment #2:

ok ... if I hadn't attached the plots, I would assume that I imagined this. 

I looked again today, and get consistent results with Matlab (the Matlab plot
is different than what I attached a few days ago).

I'll ignore the mystery of my error and close this ;-)
