Follow-up Comment #13, bug #30715 (project octave):
It's too bad that the overall design of GraphicsMagick makes it very hard to
do what I (and I suspect many others) want. I basically want the matrix
returned to be the same bitdepth as it was stored. As it stands now, you can
have a 8-bit rgb image, imwrite it, and have a 1-bit bitmap saved on file
because the matrix just so happened to be just black and white.
The freeimage library may be an alternative.
