Follow-up Comment #2, bug #31696 (project octave):
Yes, it was from development sources, but a snapshot (as far as I remember).
There really seem to have been different snapshots with the same patch level
...
The snapshot which didn't work was gnuplot-4.3.0-2008-06-03. Snapshot
gnuplot-4.3.0-2008-09-08, however, does indeed work.
Gnuplot at startup prints a line "last modified <Month> <Year>", maybe one
can exploit this ...
