Follow-up Comment #1:
The code uses OpenGL so your X server will need that option. The exact
details will vary between Linux distributions. By way of encouragement, I was
recently able to do it using Kubuntu 10.04 on a laptop with Intel and Nvidia
cards.
This is not an Octave issue per se so I am closing this report.
