Follow-up Comment #28, bug #33018 (project octave):

FYI  I've abandoned my efforts to build Octave on Solaris.  It makes a little
more progress if I specify static libraries, but there are many failures in
the makefiles and so many compiler warnings that I would not trust the program
if it did eventually link.  I'm forced to conclude that the problems are so
extensive that it's pointless for me to spend any more time on this.  If 
anyone wants to investigate or fix it, they'll have to download Solaris 10 x86
U8 and setup a system.  

I've attached a couple of PDF files which try to elucidate the problem as I
see it.  I'll eventually merge the two, but for now they are separate essays.
