Follow-up Comment #3:

This is a bug/feature of gnuplot.

The solution provided by Octave's developers to overcome the limitations of
gnuplot was to introduce an OpenGL backend (FLTK). Unfortunately, there is no
gif output available from the OpenGL backend.

I don't see how anything can be done from Octave to overcome this problem.
Thus, I'm inclined to close this item.

However, I'll keep in open temporally to allow for suggestions.
