Follow-up Comment #1:
This problem is already fixed in the current stable release, 3.4.2.
The change that fixed it is:

If you want to fix this in 3.2.x, you'll need to apply it and recompile Octave
from sources. Otherwise, I recommend upgrading to the current release.
