Follow-up Comment #7, bug #35094 (project octave):

I second Rik's comment that building on Linux ought to be easy. I'm using
CentOS 5.7, and the package manager based install fails due to some problem
with the hdf5 library. (From searching around it seems that this problem's
resolved in CentOS 6, and my experience with CentOS is that they don't worry
too much about fixing older versions.)

It's probably possible to still use .rpm while specifically excluding the hdf5
dependencies but I haven't tried that. Trust me, I would use the package
manager if I could! Even when I used Gentoo, if Portage failed I usually just
started hunting for binaries! I'm just not very adept using/debugging Make.

Ben, thanks for helping. I've attached configure.log. "./tests/fntests.log"
was not created, or was created and not saved. It's not there!

At this point, learning to use the package manager while excluding the hdf5
library seems like my simplest recourse.

Thanks all,
Ryan
