Follow-up Comment #2, bug #35243 (project octave):

Or cbrt.

I know that ^ is supposed to pick the root with smallest nonnegative argument.
If no positive real root exists, this usually means a complex root.

I think the real bug here is a documentation bug, because I am having a hard
time finding this description although I know I've seen it in the Octave
documentation. Or perhaps it was in a comment?
