Oh, I believe those were Kurt's comments, not mine.

And, I think he probably called them ugly precisely because the code
couldn't vectorize back then (he did allude elsewhere in the comments
that it seems like a puzzle).  Now that it's fully vectorized, we can
probably remove those comments.
