Follow-up Comment #10, bug #36658 (project octave): I don't think the change to the lexer and parser is difficult (see the attached preliminary patch). If you feel strongly about it, then feel free to fix the documentation, decide whether to fix the Octave sources to use ':=' instead of '=', and decide whether to deprecate and eventually make '=' not work in the context of initialization. Note that this change also affects default values for funtcion arguments.
