Follow-up Comment #18, bug #36658 (project octave): Sorry about jumping on that before looking at at the patch. I'm still not convinced that this change is needed. Using '=' doesn't cause a conflict and it has been in use for at least 15 years. This is the first time I can remember a complaint about this syntax. So I think it would be good to post the NEWS entry to the maintainers list and ask for reaction there before committing this change. Also, I count about 60 places where Octave Forge code needs to be changed. How much other user code will this affect?
