I modified gco.m along the lines you suggested.  The changeset is here
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/fa8f3955e70a).

Incidentally, does gco work at all for you?  It seems to always return the
empty matrix.  That is probably a separate bug report that should get filed.
